Crystal Methamphetamine

What Are the Realities?

When it comes to crystal meth, due to how quickly some youths become addicted and harmed, early vulnerabilities reduction is critical to “preventing” them from experimenting with it at all.

However, if your child is already experimenting you must act immediately! Take advantage of our free e-guide on crystal meth when you sign up for monthly resources, stories, and tips on what you can do about drugs and alcohol.

What is crystal meth’s threat?

The most highly addictive, the most quickly damaging, the most increasingly popular illegal drug ever to infiltrate our schools, homes, and workplaces; crystal meth is a drug that knows no bounds and that threatens to permanently disable and kill many of our precious young people. In fact the age of first use is lower every year according to Peak House, a residential treatment program for drug addiction in BC, Canada, who report that in 2003/04 their youngest age of first use was 11.9.

What is it made from?

Pseudo-ephedrine/ephedrine, red phosphorous, iodine, isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, Coleman fuel, acetone, methyl hydrate (methanol), muriatic (hydrochloric) acid, sulfuric acid/sodium hydroxide, starter fluid, lye and drain cleaners. Crystal meth is by far, the most toxic of all illicit drugs.

How prevalent is it?
  • 2004, 40 labs investigated in British Columbia1
  • 2005, 6 large labs investigated in BC (BC labs to date tend to produce pounds versus ounces)1
  • 1994, 54 labs uncovered in Washington State1
  • 2002, 1,400 labs uncovered in WA1 (primarily “box” labs: individuals in production with labs that can be transported in a box. They have warned us that this will develop in BC too.)
  • Prevalence of use varies depending on your location. You may want to ask your local police and addictions services.
